Understanding human well-being is a complex process that involves the interplay of various factors, including past experiences, present circumstances, nature, and nurture. This paper explores how these elements shape an individual's well-being and the potential contributions of both ruqyah (Islamic spiritual healing) and psychologists to promote overall well-being.


Past and Present Influences on Well-being


Past experiences play a significant role in shaping an individual's well-being. Childhood experiences, traumas, and early attachments can impact emotional and psychological development [1]. For instance, individuals who experienced adverse childhood events may be at a higher risk of developing mental health issues later in life [2]. In contrast, positive experiences and a supportive environment can foster resilience and contribute to better well-being [3].


Present circumstances also affect well-being. Socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, and social support can influence an individual's mental and physical health [4]. Stressful life events, such as loss of employment or relationship breakdowns, can negatively impact mental health [5].


Nature vs. Nurture in Well-being


The debate between nature and nurture seeks to understand the relative contributions of genetic factors (nature) and environmental influences (nurture) to human development and well-being. Research indicates that both factors interact and influence each other [6]. For instance, genetic predispositions may influence how individuals respond to environmental stressors [7].


Psychologists' Contributions to Well-being


Psychologists play a crucial role in promoting well-being through various therapeutic interventions. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps individuals identify and modify negative thought patterns and behaviours [8]. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) focuses on emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness (Linehan, 1993) [9]. These evidence-based therapies have shown efficacy in treating various mental health disorders.


Ruqyah and its Contributions to Well-being


Ruqyah is an Islamic spiritual healing practise that involves the recitation of Quranic verses and supplications to seek protection and healing from psychological and physical ailments. The belief in ruqyah is based on Islamic teachings, which acknowledge the existence of both physical and spiritual causes of distress. # For individuals who find solace in their faith, ruqyah can be a source of comfort and support during times of emotional turmoil. Believers often find reassurance and hope in the spiritual aspect of healing [10]. The sense of connection to a higher power may foster resilience and reduce anxiety and depression [11].


Integration of Ruqyah and Psychological Interventions


The integration of ruqyah with evidence-based psychological interventions can offer a holistic approach to well-being. Psychologists who are sensitive to clients' spiritual beliefs can incorporate elements of ruqyah into therapy if appropriate and desired by the client [12]. This integration may provide additional support to clients who value their faith as a coping mechanism.


Conclusion


Understanding human well-being requires considering the interplay of past experiences, present circumstances, nature, and nurture. Psychologists play a vital role in promoting well-being through evidence-based therapies. Additionally, for individuals with spiritual beliefs, ruqyah can provide a source of comfort and support. By integrating psychological interventions with ruqyah, mental health professionals can offer a holistic approach to well-being that respects the diverse beliefs and backgrounds of their clients.
